-Our Focuses Which Make Us Different-
-Reading comprehension-
Factual: explicit questions, black and white questions, focus on obvious details that are in the text. First, identify the details. Second, remove irrelevant parts of the text.
Inferencing: implicit questions, harder than factual questions, need to understand a “hidden” or concealed meaning that is suggested. The information is not directly said or shared with the reader.
Sequencing: requires statement of the events in order. In the text; what happened first, it does not matter which event was first, second, and so on.
Predicting: us of ‘clues’ from the text combined with personal knowledge and experiences to anticipate what might happen next. The more that is read, the more information is gantered (then able to revise predictions)
Factual: explicit questions, black and white questions, focus on obvious details that are in the text. First, identify the details. Second, remove irrelevant parts of the text.
Making Connections: deals with activating prior knowledge, focus on teaching to make connections between a text and their own experiences and understanding. Reading comprehension is enhanced when you are able to connect new information with prior knowledge and emotion.
Monitoring Comprehension: when you reflect on and/or assess understanding while reading the text, active reading, active reading strategies, etc. Examples that help are rereading, taking notes in margin, and asking clarifying questions.
Visualization: can deepen understanding, asks to create and describe an image(s) in their mind: can be of a place, character, or event, using all 5 senses to help. This also helps with recall.
Summarizing: what do you understand from the text, what are the most important ideas, a good summary includes the main idea and the key details that support the main idea.
Information Transfer: information that can be categorized, usually in a table form.
Vocabulary in Context: questioning/analyzing vocabulary word(s) or phrase(s) in a text.
Applied Vocabulary: must analzye vocabulary, use their own words to describe parts of the text such as a situation or character.
Reflection: personal thoughts about something that happened or someone in text. Using active reading strategies is a wonderful and effective way to keep building reading comprehension.

-Testimonials-

Cheryl Wyller is a deeply compassionate and empathetic educator. She is able to cultivate meaningful relationships with students through sharing authentically and through maintaining high levels of accountability. I worked with her as a restorative practitioner and was inspired by her constant pursuit of excellence and self-improvement. She cared deeply not only about our program, but also me as an individual and colleague. Very grateful to have worked alongside her.

I have been consistently impressed by Cheryl’s care for supporting students while being an active and contributing member of a student support team. She also possesses exceptional communication and organizational skills. I have watched her consistently go above and beyond in her work supporting students while maintaining a terrific attitude and building a positive work culture. She is a true team player.

Before Cheryl came into my son’s life, his struggles felt overwhelming. But her patience, dedication, and kindness helped him learn in a way that worked for him. She not only helped him grasp reading and writing but also boosted his confidence and self-esteem. Now, my son doesn’t see his difficulties as challenges. He knows how to apply what works for him, a good part of which I credit Cheryl for her unwavering support and belief in his potential.
This led me to ask for her help to review my son’s IEP. There is a lot of terminology and phrasing that is unfamiliar to many. How that language is used makes a huge difference in an IEP. Cheryl explained the meanings and asked me clarifying questions. This helped my son get what was best for him in his IEP. It made a difference. To think, he’s off to college next year.
